I believe there are 3 main elements to the job of an editor:

  • Creative – Involves telling the story, giving it structure and pacing, knowing when to pick up the pace, when to let it breathe… and so much more. Creative editing is about bringing the pieces together so the story reveals itself in the right way.
  • Technical – The software is only a tool. But you have to know it inside and out so it becomes an extension of yourself. A wordless language that only your hands can speak.
  • Relationships – Editing is mainly solitary, but at times involves working closely with directors and other creatives as a project unfolds. I tend to get along with most everyone and have been told I am good at cleaning up messes!

I work hard at all of these elements and, more than that, I enjoy them. I consider myself fortunate to be able to make a living doing this work.
